Winter Windshield Cracks: Why They Happen in Salt Lake City and What to Do

Why winter is windshield season in Salt Lake

Along the Wasatch Front, the daily freeze-thaw swing is relentless. Overnight lows well below freezing followed by sunny afternoons expand and contract the glass — and any existing chip with it. That's how a tiny stone chip from I-15 becomes a foot-long crack by morning.

The winter culprits

  • Freeze-thaw cycles: water seeps into a chip, freezes, expands, and pries the crack open.
  • Defroster thermal shock: blasting hot air on an icy windshield creates rapid, uneven expansion.
  • Ice scrapers and road salt: aggressive scraping and gritty brine wear and stress the glass.
  • Canyon gravel: winter road treatment in the canyons kicks up rock that chips glass at highway speed.

What to do

  • Fix chips before the first hard freeze — repair is cheap; a cold-cracked windshield isn't.
  • Warm your car gradually instead of max-blasting the defroster on frozen glass.
  • Use a proper ice scraper, never hot water, to clear ice.
  • Keep extra distance behind plows and gravel trucks.
