Can I Repair That Chip? When to Fix vs. Replace Your Windshield

The good news: most chips can be repaired
Caught early, the majority of rock chips and short cracks can be fixed with optical-grade resin. Repair preserves your factory glass, keeps the original seal intact, and is usually faster and cheaper than a full replacement.
Repair is usually possible when:
- The chip is smaller than a quarter
- A crack is under about six inches long
- The damage is not directly in the driver's line of sight
- There's only one point of damage
Replacement is the safer choice when:
- A crack has spread across your field of view
- Damage reaches the edge of the windshield (this weakens the whole panel)
- There are multiple chips or cracks
- The inner layer of glass is affected
Why acting fast matters
Utah's freeze-thaw cycles and Nevada's desert heat both cause damage to spread quickly. A chip you could have repaired on Monday can become a replacement by Friday. Temperature swings, rough roads, and even car washes accelerate cracking.
